Saturday’s race honored Christian Stover who at 16-years-old lost his life in an ATV crash in 2009. In 2007, when he was just 14 years old, Stover became the youngest ever Lightning Sprint Car main event winner at The PAS. After his Lightning Sprint Car win, the teenage sensation went on to race with VRA, winged sprint cars in Northern California and with USAC at the 2008 Oval Nationals.

Starting on the outside of the front row in the 16-car main event field, Bender set the pace into the first turn over Spring Valley’s Jarrett Kramer when starter Eddie Ramirez threw the green flag to begin the 20-lapper. Bender’s teenage brother A.J., who came into the night leading the championship point standings, was third at the outset. However, disaster struck on the first lap for A.J. when he broke a chain and coasted back to a stop and a last place finish. That brought out the only yellow in the main event.

Brent Sexton, driving Chris Dickey’s car that was designed to look like an exact replica of the car Stover drove to victory as a 14 year old at The PAS, was slated to start on the pole for the main event. When he was late getting to the grid, officials penalized him and made him start last. Amazingly, he went from 16th to 7th on the first circuit.

When the race was restarted, Bobby Bender, Kramer, Tim Brown of Wildomar, impressive rookie Kevin Michnowicz of Lomita and Corona’s Darren Hillberg occupied the top five spots.

While Bender was setting a sizzling pace and building a small lead at the front, Sexton was coming up fast. The 2009 series champion quickly disposed of the “Okie Astronut” Tobey Sampson of Torrance and Hillberg to move into the top five. He then chased down Michnowicz and Brown and was up to third on lap six.

While Sexton was slicing and dicing his way to the front, leader Bender and second place Kramer were already encountering lapped traffic. Despite the lapped traffic, Bender maintained an eight to ten car advantage over Kramer most of the race. With three laps go, Sexton caught Kramer and they began to fight for second.

Coming off turn two on the last lap, Bender drifted wide allowing Kramer to close in, but the latter could get not closer than three car lengths at the checkered flag. Sexton was another three lengths back in third at the finish with Brown and Michnowicz rounding out the top five. Bender had lapped all but six cars by the end of the race.

After telling legendary Southern California announcer Chris Holt about his win and thanking his crew, Bender had time to reflect on Stover. “It is not even about the purse. It is about racing for Christian,” the young driver told the huge crowd. “Last year when this all happened, I put a sticker on the hood of my car and I said, ‘Christian is going to be riding on the hood all year long.’ It is still there! I have not even changed the hood. Thank you to Denny (Christian’s Dad) and the Christian Stover Foundation.”

Earlier in the night, Sexton took home $200.00 for winning the three-lap dash for cash over A.J. Bender, Bobby Bender and Michnowicz. Sexton and A.J. won the two six lap heat races.

Saturday night saw racing at one of Christians favorite tracks, Ventura Raceway, which sits in Ventura, CA about 100 yards from the ocean. If you have never seen this track it is worth checking out. The view is spectacular with the ocean on one side of you and some of the country’s best 360 sprint car racing on the other side. The night of racing included two different racing organizations that Christian was so proud to be a part of, the California Lightning Sprint and the VRA 360 Sprints. Steve “Biggie” Watt has built a car honoring the Christian Stover Foundation and races it only at select events. This car was one that Christian actually drove for Steve at the beginning of the 2009 season (Steve has entered this car in 9 events since last April and has won 5 times and finished no less than 3rd the other 4 times with 3 different drivers piloting the car). Saturday night was another one of the selected races in which “Biggie” entered the number 81 Christian Stover Foundation, Maxwell industries car. Third generation sprint car driver Matt Mitchell would be the driver of choice for this race and like so many of “Biggies” decisions it would be the right choice for this night. Matt began the night by winning his heat race from his starting position of 4th . His win earned him the honor of starting in the 8th spot for the nights main event. 30 cars started the 30 lap main event which saw some of the best racing I have seen in the few years I have been following the sport. Matt would start 8th and on lap 27 running right up next to the wall would make the pass on the second place car and ultimately take the win.
This was my first time meeting Matt and his dad, Nick, and I must say I was very impressed by the two of them and could tell that they are genuinely good people and great representatives for the Christian Stover Foundation. Matt reminded me of Christian with the grin on his face and desire to win, you could see he is doing what he loves to do. Matt Mitchell of Yorba Linda, CA races for JW Mitchell Motorsports in honor of his late uncle who passed away while competing in a midget at the famed Hanford Speedway.
As Christians dad it is still unbelievably difficult for me to go to these races without Christian, however I have to say that “Biggie” and Karen Watt made me feel very comfortable as did Jim Naylor and the rest of the crew and competitors at Ventura speedway. It is easy to see why Christian enjoyed racing there like he did.
The donation was $2,500 and they used the money to purchase class t-shirts as well as to replace equipment, including, a drill press, solvent tank, welding supplies, a mig welder, a band saw, a belt sander and grinding wheels. The club was also able to replenish 11 welding bottles with argon, oxygen, steel mix and acetylene. Instructor John Anderson explains, “The tools and equipment have greatly benefited our program. The students have been able to acquire needed skills that will enhance their education and life long interest. We are always reminded of Christian’s love and dedication of our program.”
